What I walked into
The place is the Upper Bay Museum, at the end of Walnut Street in North East, Maryland, tucked into the community park right on the North East River. From the outside it looks like exactly what it is — a working waterfront building. Inside, the first thing that got me wasn't the collection. It was the ceiling. Original timber, black with age, exposed beams, the real bones of an 1880s commercial fish house.
This building opened in 1880 as the H.L. Harvey Fish Market, and the Harvey fleet hauled thousands of pounds of shad and herring out of this river every spring. It ran as a fish house until 1973. The town of North East bought the property in 1977, and the museum moved its collection in around 1983 — the museum's own president has said that when they did, "you could still smell the fish." One of the best collections on the bay
What's inside is special. Full-size Chesapeake workboats sitting on the floor. A sneak boat rigged out with decoys exactly the way a market gunner would've run it. Racked oars and push-poles. A recreated decoy carver's shop with the real bench and tools, and a gunner's bunk room set up like the men just stepped out for a minute — lantern still hanging, plates still on the table. VisitMaryland calls it one of the country's best collections of marine engines, and there are somewhere north of a thousand decoys in here.
And the history behind it is wild. Back in the 1870s, market hunters were shooting an estimated 15,000 canvasback ducks a day off the Susquehanna Flats out front, shipping them by the barrel to restaurants in Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York. (Ducks Unlimited.) They did it from sinkboxes — coffin-shaped rigs that floated a hunter flush to the waterline, hidden in a spread of hundreds of decoys. (Project Upland.) The museum has the only known double sinkbox left in existence, plus punt guns — the 12-foot fowling cannons that could take 30 to 50 birds in a single shot. That whole way of life got legislated out of existence — the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 ended market hunting, Maryland outlawed the sinkbox in 1934, and the feds banned it in 1935. The tools that are now behind glass in this building were illegal almost a century ago. That's exactly why a group of local hunters and history-minded folks — the old Cecil County Hunters Association — started saving them in the first place. They knew it was all about to disappear.

Now the part I can't turn off — the building is the enemy
Here's where my brain goes, because this is what I do for a living. This is a 100% volunteer, donation-at-the-door non-profit. (Volunteer Cecil.) And what are they trying to protect? Wood decoys. Mounted birds. Old paper, photos and charts. Marine engines and iron. Leather and canvas. Every single one of those materials gets destroyed by humidity — and worse, by humidity that swings up and down.
And the building doing the protecting is an uninsulated 1880s fish house, sitting right on the river. No insulation. No vapor barrier. Plank-and-beam construction, hard up against open water, in a Maryland summer where the outdoor air is heavy as a wet towel. That is about the hardest preservation environment you can hand a contractor.
Wood is the one that scares me most. When relative humidity climbs, wood swells; when it drops, wood shrinks. Do that over and over to a 125-year-old gilling skiff or a carved canvasback and it checks, cracks, and the joints let go. Metal corrodes faster in damp air. Paper foxes and warps. The enemy here isn't really one bad number — it's the swing.
So what do you actually do? (The honest version)
Here's where I'll be straight, because the wrong answer is to oversell it. A real museum — a Smithsonian — holds tight tolerances: roughly 70°F and 50% relative humidity, plus or minus a couple points, year-round. (Smithsonian conservation guidance; NPS Conserve O Gram.) You hit that with sealed envelopes, redundant equipment, and tight controls.
You are not hitting Smithsonian numbers in an uninsulated 1880s fish house on a volunteer budget. Anybody who tells this museum they can is selling them something. So you design for what's real and what protects the collection the most for the dollar:
- Go after the swing first, not the perfect number. Even the conservation folks say a stable moderate range beats a perfect range that bounces. Aim to hold relative humidity in a sane band — somewhere around 45–55% — and kill the wild jumps. That single move protects the wood more than chasing two degrees.
- Right-size the equipment — on purpose run it long and gentle. The instinct on a hot building is to throw a big oversized unit at it. Wrong move here. An oversized system satisfies the thermostat in two minutes and shuts off before it pulls any real moisture out of the air. A properly sized system runs longer cycles, and long runtime is what actually dehumidifies. In a building like this you'd often add dedicated dehumidification so moisture control doesn't depend on whether it's a cooling day.
- Seal the easy air leaks before you buy a bigger machine. Every cubic foot of hot river air leaking in is moisture you then have to pay to remove. Air-sealing is the cheapest "ton" you'll ever buy.
- Add what insulation you honestly can — without wrecking the historic fabric. You're not gutting an 1880 building. But there's almost always something: the roof deck, attic spaces, the rim, spots that don't touch the character of the place. Every bit you add lowers the load and steadies the box.
- Give the volunteers something they can actually run. No 14-screen control system nobody touches. Simple, robust equipment, clear setpoints, a couple of cheap humidity loggers so they can see what's happening. The best system for a volunteer non-profit is the one that still works in five years because it didn't need a specialist.
That's the whole job in a building like this. Not perfect — honest. Protect what you can, respect the building, respect the budget, and keep these old boats and these old tools around for the next person who walks in and looks up at that ceiling.
Why it stuck with me
Most of my work is commercial rooftops — big steel, big tonnage, swap it and go. This was the opposite. A building older than almost anything I touch, full of stuff that can't be replaced, run by people doing it for love and donations. The right answer wasn't the biggest system or the fanciest one. It was the honest one. And that's a kind of engineering I think we forget about — designing for the building and the people you actually have, not the spec sheet you wish you had.
If you're anywhere near the head of the bay, go see it. It's open weekends in season, admission is free, and the volunteers will talk your ear off in the best way. Drop something in the donation box while you're there. Buildings like this don't keep themselves.

I've kept descriptions of the collection to what I actually saw and what the records support: the marine-engine collection is documented as "one of the country's best," but I'm not naming specific engine brands because no reliable source confirms them; the boat with the "Chauncey M. Depew" sign and the gunner's bunk room are described from what's on screen, not from provenance records.
